Natureworks has been running therapeutic horticulture and training projects at several bases in and
around Bristol since May 2000.
In January 2011 we acquired a new training base at Latteridge Green Farm. This site has enabled us to
expand our cut flower growing social enterprise and to offer more opportunities for people to learn about commercial growing and retailing, in a supported environment. We have a growing area of about 4 acres and 1 large polytunnel so far, with lots of plans to develop the site and make the Social Enterprise financially viable and self supporting in the future. We are specialising in growing Organic cut flowers and cottage garden perennials, vegetable transplants and herb plants for sale at Farmers Markets and to other retail outlets. Trainees are involved in all aspects of this work, from seed sowing to sale and delivery of the product. The site is also more secure and will allow us to work with more vulnerable groups, or those who need to wander and can take advantage of our large enclosed site.
What do we do?
Supported training and work preparation in horticulture and other land based skills
We deliver and assess landbased training qualifications to national standards. We can currently
offer a level 1 award, certificate or diploma in Practical Horticultural Skills from City and Guilds/
NPTC, for those who are interested and ready. This is recognised and valued by employers in
the industry.
Work preparation – off site garden maintenance work or estate work for those who would
like to gain the experience of being in a semi-commercial landscaping team, or on-site work preparation
in a commercial flower and plant production enterprise
Short term work experience with other local employers in the industry who we have built
relationships with – a garden centre, nursery and several landscaping companies.
Soft skills/life skills – increased self esteem, social skills, communication, IT and numeracy
How do we do it?
We employ staff who understand the barriers faced by people with learning difficulties and
mental health support needs when learning new skills and trying to achieve new things
A high staff:trainee ratio and a flexible approach to offer extra support where needed
A training and work programme that is centred on individuals and responsive to their needs
A step-by-step approach, reducing the pressure when necessary and taking the time needed to create sustainable progress
With help from the restorative qualities of nature!
