The Flower Farmers' Big WeekendThe Flower Farmers’ Big Weekend is coming! In three weeks’ time, on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August, more than 40 people will be spending a day with us at Organic Blooms as part of this national celebration of ethical flower farming, organised by growers’ association Flowers From The Farm.

The guests at The Flower Farmer’s Big Weekend events at Organic Blooms will see how our Soil Association-certified cut flower farm runs and find out how we use flower farming to improve the wellbeing and employability of people with support needs.

Initially we planned to hold just one event as part of the weekend, but it sold out so quickly that we decided to add a second – which also promptly sold out!

Flowers From The Farm has over 600 members, including Organic Blooms. Around 100 flower growers across Great Britain are holding open days and events throughout the weekend of 16 to 18 August to promote and raise awareness of the benefits of locally-grown British flowers. The participating farms may be very different shapes and sizes but we all have one thing in common: a passion for seasonal, sustainable, locally-grown flowers.

With the vast majority – over 90% – of the flowers and house plants bought in the UK imported from overseas, with enormous carbon footprints and often grown in ways that damage the environment and people, it is wonderful to see a growing interest in British flowers. Working together as part of Flowers From The Farm network is helping growers to gradually take back a little bit of the market from unsustainable imports.

So what will our visitors be doing during their visit during The Flower Farmers’ Big Weekend? Cutting flowers from our glorious cutting gardens and making posies; seed-sowing and maybe a bit of propagation, wandering around our fields, gardens and polytunnels and hearing all about our organic cut flower farm – and of course there will be plenty of tea and cake!

We are really looking forward to our inaugural events for The Flowers Farmer’s Big Weekend, but for those of you can’t be with us for these exciting events we are throwing our gates open again for our annual open morning on Saturday 28 September from 10am until 1pm. We will have tours of our flower farm, stalls selling plants and ethical gifts and treats, lots and lots of tea and cake (as always!) and music from the Frampton Shanty Men. Oh, and of course gorgeous flowers galore. We look forward to seeing you then!
